OH MY GOD. I don't know if you watch Lily-Pily, but she recommended to watch the dubbed Russian version of 9 with english subtitles, and I did, and it fixes all those plot holes that we had decided ruined the movie! It gave it so much more meaning, I know so much more about each stitchpunk, and the scientist!!! It's AMAZING and now I am HEAD OVER HEELS for the movie <3 I'm attached to every little stitchpunk, besides 1 of course (lol), something that the normal english version couldn't do.
I'm not sure why the russians gave it more meaning than Shane Acker did, but whatever. They satisfied all our complaints. I don't know why Acker didn't explain this!!!! It's beautiful! I now truly apreciate the film in all it's aspects!
